OtterBox Symmetry Series Clear Case — iPhone 16 Pro
OtterBox protection in a slim clear shell
$34.23 · 4.6/5 · 1,134 reviews
The iPhone 16 line is five phones that share a name and almost nothing a case maker cares about. The 16, 16 Plus, 16 Pro, 16 Pro Max and 16e differ in size, camera layout and buttons, so the first rule of buying a case for any of them is simple: the listing has to name your exact model.
This guide matches six cases to the model each one is made for, and explains the two details that trip people up most, the Camera Control button and the 16e's missing magnets.
Which iPhone 16 do you have?
- iPhone 16: 6.1-inch screen, two cameras stacked vertically, Camera Control button on the right edge
- iPhone 16 Plus: the same design at 6.7 inches
- iPhone 16 Pro: 6.3-inch screen, three cameras
- iPhone 16 Pro Max: 6.9-inch screen, three cameras
- iPhone 16e: 6.1-inch screen, a single camera, no Camera Control button and no MagSafe magnets
If you are not sure, the model name is under Settings, General, About. The iPhone 16 page lists every model in the family side by side.
What to look for
- Model-exact fit. Camera cutouts differ across the 16 family. A listing that claims to fit several of these phones at once is usually a different mould per model sold from one page, so check that you are selecting the right variant.
- How the case handles Camera Control. Some cases leave an open cutout around the button, which is simple but leaves a gap in the side wall. Others cover it with a conductive layer so presses and slides still register. Neither is wrong. An open cutout on a thick case can make the button harder to reach.
- Real magnets, where it claims MagSafe. A magnet ring inside the case keeps wallets, mounts and chargers holding at close to full strength. "MagSafe compatible" without a stated magnet ring often just means thin.
- Review depth. A rating built on thousands of reviews tells you more than one built on forty. Several good 16-family cases have short review histories, and we flag those below.
The 16e is the exception
The 16e is the one that changes the rules. It charges wirelessly but has no magnets inside it, so nothing magnetic sticks to the bare phone. A case with a built-in magnet ring is what makes a wallet, a car mount or a grip possible at all.
We wrote that up separately because it catches so many people out: does the iPhone 16e have MagSafe lists exactly which accessories work bare, which need a magnet ring, and which never will.
If the 16e is the phone you are buying for, go straight to the dedicated 16e case guide. The picks there all carry a real magnet array, which is the one specification that matters on that phone. If you already own a 16e case you like, a stick-on magnet ring adds attachment for a few dollars.
How these were picked
We started from Amazon listings for each model in the family and compared what each one states about fit, protection and magnets, along with its rating and what owners say in reviews. We did not physically test these cases. Prices, ratings and review counts on the cards are snapshots from the Amazon listing, so the price on Amazon is the one that counts.
Our picks by model
iPhone 16 Pro. OtterBox's Symmetry Series Clear is the safe default: slim, clear rather than tinted, and backed by over a thousand reviews at 4.6 stars. It has no built-in magnets, so expect a weaker hold from magnetic accessories. The AICase Clear 3-in-1 is the budget rugged alternative, with three layers and more bulk.
iPhone 16 Plus. Pelican's Protector brings a rugged brand name and a magnet ring, though its review count is still small. IDweel's case is the cheapest pick in the guide and bundles a screen protector and camera lens protector with a built-in stand. It is also a newer listing with a short review history, so treat the rating with some caution.
iPhone 16. CCSmall's cooling case with a magnetic ring is a niche pick for a phone that runs warm during navigation or gaming. Its rating is the lowest here, at 4.0.
iPhone 16e. AICase's clear heavy-duty case is a full-body rugged option made specifically for Apple's budget model. It has no magnet ring, so it suits people who do not plan to use magnetic accessories.
There is no 16 Pro Max pick in this guide yet. If that is your phone, apply the same checklist above and insist on a listing that names the 16 Pro Max.
Whichever model you have, the magnet question decides what you can attach afterwards. A MagSafe wallet, a magnetic car mount and a magnetic grip all hold best on a case with its own magnet ring, and on the 16e they need one to hold at all. If your phone is a generation or two older, the rugged case guide is where the real bargains are, and the iPhone 15 case guide covers that family model by model.

Frequently asked questions
Do iPhone 15 cases fit the iPhone 16? No. The iPhone 16 added the Camera Control button and changed the camera layout, so iPhone 15 cases do not fit properly.
Does the iPhone 16e support MagSafe? The 16e charges wirelessly but has no built-in magnets, so magnetic accessories do not attach to the bare phone. A case with its own magnet ring is the cheapest way to add that back.
Will an iPhone 16 case fit the iPhone 16e? No. The two phones have the same screen size but different camera layouts and buttons, and the 16e has no Camera Control. Buy a case that names the 16e.
Do iPhone 16 Pro cases fit the iPhone 16? No. The 16 Pro is slightly larger, with a 6.3-inch screen and a three-camera layout, so the cutouts and dimensions do not match the 6.1-inch iPhone 16.
Does a case interfere with the Camera Control button? It can. Cases with an open cutout leave the button exposed, which works but can be awkward on a thick case. Cases with a covered, touch-sensitive button pass presses and slides through.
