Rugged cases from OtterBox, Speck and LifeProof rarely get cheap while a phone is current. Once the phone is a generation or two old, the same cases tend to sell well below their launch prices. If you are keeping an iPhone 12, 13, 14 or 15 for another year or two, that is some of the best value in accessories.

Why older-phone cases are the best deals

Case makers produce heavily for each iPhone launch and then clear inventory as the next generation ships. The case itself does not age. An OtterBox Commuter for the 15 Pro Max protects exactly as well today as it did at launch.

The catch is supply. Once a line is discontinued, colours and sizes disappear one by one, and what is left on Amazon is what is left. If a pick below fits your phone and the price looks right, there is little reason to wait.

What a drop rating does and does not tell you

Most rugged cases quote a drop height or the phrase "military grade". Both refer to the same idea: the US military's MIL-STD-810 drop procedure, which involves repeated drops from roughly four feet onto a hard surface. Bigger numbers, such as 13 feet, come from the manufacturer's own extended testing.

Two things are worth knowing. First, manufacturers run or commission these tests themselves, and there is no independent body certifying the result. An established brand has a reputation and a warranty behind its number. A no-name listing does not. Second, a drop rating describes the phone surviving, not the screen staying uncracked in every fall. A raised lip around the screen and camera matters as much as the headline height.

How to choose

• Layers. The usual rugged design is a soft inner layer that absorbs shock under a hard outer shell that spreads it. Single-layer TPU shells marketed as rugged protect less.
• Raised edges. Look for a lip that stands above the screen and the camera lenses.
• Port covers. Useful if the phone lives in a work pocket full of dust or lint. Slightly annoying if you charge by cable several times a day.
• Built-in screen cover or holster. Good for job sites. Overkill for an office.
• Warranty and brand. Part of what you pay for with OtterBox or Speck is a company that will still answer in a year.

The MagSafe trade-off

Thickness is the enemy of magnets. A rugged case without its own magnet ring noticeably weakens a MagSafe wallet or a magnetic grip, and can stop a magnetic car mount holding at all. The reasons are set out in why MagSafe accessories fall off.

LifeProof NEXT Series, iPhone 12 mini. A premium-brand case for under ten dollars at the time we checked, with over 1,800 reviews. The line is discontinued, so stock will not last, and it fits the 12 mini only.

AICase Magnetic Heavy Duty, iPhone 13 Pro Max. The only pick with a stated magnet ring, at a budget price. Its review count is very small, so treat the rating as provisional.
