The iPhone Air exists to be thin. Every case you put on it gives some of that thinness back, and the only real question is how much you are willing to trade for how much protection.

Three kinds of case, three trade-offs

The picks fall into three groups, and they fail in different ways.

Ultra-thin shells are 0.3 to 0.5mm of hard plastic or woven aramid. They stop scratches and keep the phone feeling almost bare. They do very little for a drop, and their reviews say so plainly. Both of ours draw complaints about a missing or minimal screen lip, which matters if you lay the phone face down.

Slim magnetic hybrids pair a hard back with a flexible TPU frame and a ring of magnets. They add visible thickness but still slip into a pocket, and this is where most people should land. The weak spot across this group is grip: matte and clear backs are slick.

Protective cases like OtterBox's Commuter add a second layer and genuine drop ratings. They also add the most bulk, which on the Air is the thing you paid to avoid.

The camera plateau is the part that hits the table

On most iPhones the camera is a square in one corner. On the Air it sits on a raised plateau that spans the full width of the back, which means a case has to build its protective lip across the whole top of the phone, not just around one corner.

Look for a stated raised camera edge. The memumi shell gives a figure, 0.5mm, which is modest but real. The JETech and Commuter listings describe raised camera guards without a number. One PITAKA reviewer reports a poor fit around the plateau, which is worth knowing on a case that costs fifty dollars.

Magnets, and the MagSafe battery question

The Air's battery is small, and a lot of owners pair it with a magnetic battery pack. What holds that pack in place is the magnet ring, so whether a case has its own magnets matters more here than on most phones.

None of the six listings mention a battery pack by name, so we cannot tell you which ones hold one best. What we can tell you is which ones state built-in magnets: the JETech, both OtterBoxes and the PITAKA do. Spigen's listing says only "compatible with MagSafe accessories" and gives no count or strength. The memumi has no magnets at all; the listing does not claim any, and a reviewer confirms it relies on the phone's own, which works because the shell is so thin. If you want a stronger hold on a thin case, a magnet ring is the usual fix, and one memumi reviewer mentions fitting one inside.

About the review numbers

Five of these six listings pool their ratings across other phones. Their model pickers include the iPhone 17 and 17 Pro models, and in one case phones going back years. Most of the review excerpts on them name those phones, not the Air. So the star ratings below describe the brand's case line, and we have left their review counts off rather than pass them off as Air reviews.

The exception is the memumi shell, which is sold for the Air alone and whose reviews come from Air owners.

Apple sells its own clear case and bumper for the Air. We could not find a genuine Apple listing for either on Amazon, so neither is here.
