Does the iPhone 17e Have MagSafe? Yes, Unlike the 16e

Yes. The iPhone 17e has MagSafe, and that is a genuine change rather than a marketing distinction.

Apple's specification page for the 17e lists a "MagSafe and Wireless Charging" section containing MagSafe wireless charging up to 15W, Qi2 up to 15W, a magnet array and an alignment magnet. The same page for the iPhone 16e has no such section at all, because that phone has no magnets in it.

If you are moving from a 16e to a 17e, this is the upgrade you will feel most often, and Apple barely mentioned it.

What the magnet array actually buys you

The 16e charges wirelessly but attracts nothing. Every magnetic accessory needs a case with a magnet ring, or a stick-on magnet ring, before it will hold at all.

On the 17e, all of that works out of the box:

• A MagSafe wallet sticks to the bare phone
• A magnetic car mount grips without a magnet-ring case
• A magnetic charger snaps into alignment instead of needing to be nudged around a pad
• A magnetic grip attaches directly

The alignment magnet matters as much as the ring. It is the small magnet that tells a directional accessory which way is up, and it is why a wallet on a proper MagSafe phone stays square instead of slowly rotating sideways.

What you no longer have to buy

The main saving is that a case with a built-in magnet array stops being mandatory. On a 16e it is a prerequisite for the whole accessory category, which is why our 16e case guide filters for that one specification above everything else.

On a 17e you can buy a case for the reasons you would normally buy one: protection, grip, looks. A slim case with no magnets still passes attachment through well enough for a wallet or a charger, because the magnets are now in the phone rather than needing to be added by the case.

That said, thickness still costs you holding force. A rugged case with no magnet array of its own will weaken attachment noticeably, for the reasons in why MagSafe accessories fall off. A magnet-ring case is now an upgrade rather than a requirement.

Where the 17e still sits below the Pro models

Charging speed is the remaining gap, and it is wider than it used to be.

The 17e tops out at 15W over MagSafe. The iPhone 17 and the iPhone 18 Pro both go to 25W, which Apple notes requires a 30W or larger power adapter. So the newer flagships charge meaningfully faster on a magnetic charger while the 17e sits at the rate MagSafe has offered since it launched.

In practice 15W is fine for overnight charging and for a desk pad. It matters on a long drive with navigation running, where a faster charger gains ground against the load and a slower one can lose it.

Which accessories to buy first

If you are coming from a 16e with a drawer of workarounds, the stick-on rings and magnet-ring cases are now redundant. Start over with the accessory you actually wanted rather than the adapter you needed to make it work.
