Best iPhone Duo Cases: Hinge Protection, Magnets and What Nobody Knows Yet

The iPhone Duo goes on pre-order on October 16 and reaches customers on October 23. Every case listed for it on Amazon today was designed from dimensions, not from a phone in someone's hand.

That makes this a different kind of guide. Nobody has reported on fit, because nobody can. Every star rating below is pooled from the brand's cases for other phones, and we say so on each one. What you can judge is what each listing commits to in writing, and on a foldable the most important commitment is what happens at the hinge.

Each pick shows the colours it comes in and a preview of how it looks on each iPhone Duo colour, Star White and Night Sky.

What we looked for

• A clear answer about the hinge: covered, exposed, or not mentioned
• A stated magnet array, with a count or a grade, because the Duo weighs 8.96 ounces according to Apple
• Listed for the iPhone Duo alone, not a size borrowed from another foldable
• Raised lips around the camera and outer screen, published in millimetres where the seller gives them
• A spread of prices, since a case bought before launch is a case you may replace

The hinge question

A foldable case has a problem a normal case does not: it has to protect two halves that move relative to each other, and the part joining them.

The listings here take three approaches.

A hinge cover built into the case. Spigen describes a spring-loaded hinge cover that encloses the hinge at all times, with steel pins interlocking the front and rear panels. Caka uses a polycarbonate hinge cover and states that the phone still folds and unfolds as normal. FNTCASE's kickstand model claims a reinforced hinge structure and 360-degree coverage.

Two separate pieces. Mkeke's Techwoven case is a back shell plus a separate front cover held on with adhesive strips. A two-piece case leaves the hinge free to move, and usually leaves it exposed. Apple's own iPhone Duo Case is also described as a "two-part design that wraps around both sides of the device". Apple does not say whether it covers the hinge.

Not mentioned. FNTCASE's clear case and PITAKA's aramid case say nothing about the hinge. Treat that as exposed until photos from owners say otherwise.

Whether a covered hinge opens fully flat, and whether it adds resistance, is exactly the kind of thing only owners can tell you. Only Caka claims in writing that folding is unaffected. If opening the phone to its full 7.6 inches without a fight matters to you, that is the first thing to check in reviews after October 23.

Magnets, and which half they are in

The Duo has MagSafe built in: Apple's specification page lists a magnet array, an alignment magnet, and MagSafe and Qi2 charging up to 25W. A case's job is to pass that through or add its own.

Four picks state their magnets: Spigen N52, FNTCASE clear 38 N52 magnets rated by the seller at 2,400g, Caka N52SH, and FNTCASE kickstand 38 N56. Mkeke says only "integrated magnetic ring" and PITAKA uses a magnet film with no figures, which is weaker as a claim rather than necessarily weaker as a magnet.

What no listing and no Apple page says is which half of the phone the magnet array sits in. That matters for where a wallet or mount ends up when the phone is open. About Apple's own cases

Apple sells two: the iPhone Duo Case at $79 in sand and navy blue, and the iPhone Duo Folio at $129 in navy blue and taupe, with a built-in kickstand. Apple says both are compatible with MagSafe, Qi2 25W and Qi chargers.

We did not find a genuine Apple listing for either on Amazon, so neither appears below. They come from the company that made the phone, which is a real advantage when nobody else has fitted one. At $79 the case alone costs more than half as much again as our most expensive pick.

The ratings are not about this phone

FNTCASE's clear case shows 86,286 ratings. The same listing sells sizes for Galaxy Z Fold, Pixel Fold, Moto Razr and a long list of older iPhones, and the ratings cover all of them. The review excerpts on the other listings name the iPhone 13, 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max. On the Caka listing they praise a sliding camera cover and a finger ring, neither of which this case lists.

That is normal on Amazon and it is still real evidence, but about the brand, not the Duo case. Spigen's listing has two ratings, which tell you nothing, so we show none.

Our picks

Six cases from thirteen dollars to fifty. The top pick makes the most specific hinge claim. The rest are ordered by price. At this stage the cheaper ones are the sensible buy: whatever you choose, it is unproven until the phone ships.

Do iPhone Duo cases cover the hinge? Some do. Spigen, Caka and FNTCASE's kickstand model state a hinge cover or reinforced hinge. Two-piece cases usually leave it exposed, and several listings do not mention the hinge at all.
