Does the iPhone Duo Have MagSafe? Yes, With One Open Question

Yes. The iPhone Duo has MagSafe, and it is the full version rather than a charging-only one.

Apple's specification page lists MagSafe wireless charging up to 25W, Qi2 wireless charging up to 25W, a magnet array and an alignment magnet. Apple also says both of its own cases, the $79 iPhone Duo Case and the $129 iPhone Duo Folio, are compatible with MagSafe, Qi2 25W and Qi-certified chargers.

So the short answer is the same as for any recent iPhone. The longer answer is about what happens when the phone folds.

What the spec sheet confirms

• MagSafe charging up to 25W, the same top rate as the iPhone 17 and 18 Pro
• Qi2 charging up to 25W, so third-party Qi2 chargers are not a step down
• A magnet array and an alignment magnet, which is what makes wallets, grips and mounts attach and stay square
• Up to 50 percent in around 30 minutes with a MagSafe or Qi2 charger, according to Apple. Its spec page adds that the MagSafe figure assumes a 35W or larger adapter

That covers every accessory category a MagSafe phone supports. A MagSafe wallet, a magnetic car mount or a magnetic grip should attach to the bare phone without a magnet-ring case.

Which half are the magnets in?

This is the question that is new with a foldable, and Apple has not answered it.

Neither the specification page nor Apple's announcement says where the magnet array sits. The phone has a back, but when it is open, that back is split across two halves. The MagSafe ring has to be in one of them, or be arranged in some way Apple has not described.

We are not going to guess. It affects wallets, mounts and charging, covered below, and it is worth checking once the phone ships on October 23.

Apple does mention a separate use of magnets: it says the hinge, "together with an integrated magnet array, delivers a satisfying and secure closure". Apple does not say whether that is the same array that MagSafe accessories attach to.

Folded versus open

Folded, the Duo is a single 0.44-inch slab with one back. A wallet, grip or mount should behave the way it does on any iPhone, apart from the thickness.

Open, the phone is 0.21 inches thick, per Apple, and the accessory stays on whichever half holds the magnets. That half gets the extra weight, and anything that sticks out on the back will sit behind part of the inner screen.

A wallet is the accessory most likely to get in the way. Whether it stops the phone lying flat on a table when open depends on where it sits, which comes back to the unanswered question. A thin wallet will matter less than a thick one either way.

A car mount holds the phone by the magnet half. It should be fine folded. Opening the phone on a mount means the other half hangs free, which is not how most people will use one.

Charging

Charging should be the least complicated part. The phone takes 25W over MagSafe or Qi2, and a MagSafe or Qi2 charger puts the magnet alignment in charge of positioning.

Two things can get in the way. The first is a thick case, for the same reasons as on any phone, which why MagSafe accessories fall off goes through. The second is a case whose back is split at the hinge. A charger only needs to meet the half that holds the coil, but you need to know which half that is.
